The BRAVE Appeal

Dear Friends and Valued Supporters,

As we celebrate 16 years of service, our commitment to supporting military service members and their families during the transition from active duty to civilian life remains as strong as ever. Over the years, we’ve worked tirelessly to advocate for institutional change, create new laws that enhance financial security for veterans, and collaborate with other stakeholders who share our vision for a better future for veterans.

Our Contributions:

  • We champion legislative changes that improve veterans' financial security.

  • We partner with key veteran ecosystem stakeholders to advance our shared goals.

Our Approach:

As a volunteer-run organization, we rely on passionate student interns who conduct valuable research that drives our initiatives. These interns work closely with us to analyze trends and address the evolving needs of veterans. Their dedication has been a cornerstone of our success, as seen in the glowing testimonials from these students. We have now sent 5 students to Ivy League graduate and law schools and have nearly tripled our enrollment over the last year, bringing us to 54 students - all seeking research opportunities in support of our veterans’ community.

In 2024, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey signed the HERO Act into law. Recognizing our efforts, the Commonwealth established the BRAVE Commission to Research and Improve Veterans’ Quality of Life. In 2025, the Commission was renamed the Veterans Quality of Life Commission, where BRAVE continues to serve as a member.

As we begin our work with the Massachusetts State Office of Veteran Advocate, I invite you to support our mission by donating to fund the vital research conducted by our student interns. Your generous contribution will directly support their efforts to improve the quality of life for veterans in Massachusetts.

Together, we can make a lasting impact. As Stephen J. Canonico, former Pentagon Master Sergeant, said, "You’re not just trying to help us (the US Army Soldier for Life Program); you are trying to help the Whole Force!" With your help, we can continue this crucial work.

Thank you for your support and dedication to improving the lives of those who have served our nation.

Sincerely,

Leroy Ashwood, President and CEO, and the BRAVE Team!
